Rough Winds was made in July several months after the last lock down. I worked over an existing painting allowing the original colours to influence the new colours I chose. It started calm but a period of frenetic almost violent frenzied mark making decided on the direction of this piece. I often soften these expressive outbursts which happen in nearly all my paintings but this one decided it wanted to keep that energy. Maybe this painting was a manifestation of the need of all of us to feel and share freedom after lockdown. We use the expression ‘blowing the cobwebs away’ maybe this was an extension of that desire depicted as a landscape.
