Julia Poulton

Originally from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, I have lived in Harrogate for many years, where I practice from my studio. I completed a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art at the University of East London in 1994. I returned to my roots in Yorkshire following this and after a various jobs, overseas travel and raising a family, I now dedicate my time to painting.

I have always felt a strong connection with nature, and this for many years has been the main source of inspiration for my work. Yet the urge to focus on process and use paint to express my ‘internal’ world, has latterly become intrinsic to my practice. My paintings have thus become more fluid and abstract over time, though references to landscape may still emerge as a result of this approach. Through exploring a deeper sense of self, I have also been developing a series of works incorporating the abstract figure.

I work mainly in oils on canvas or board. With a passion for colour, I am interested in creating depth, texture and contrasting tones. I invite the viewer to find their own resonance within my paintings, whether this be through a sense of mood, place or simply engaging with colour.
